Prof. Dr. Gerhard Stickel, former Director of IDS and President of EFNIL, was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class on 28 February 2017.

The ceremony was presented by the Baden-Württemberg Minister of Science, Research and Art, Mrs. Theresia Bauer. Gerhard Stickel, who already was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on Ribbon in 2011, receives the award for his "outstanding achievements as President of the European Association of national language institutions in Europe (European Federation of National Institutions for Language / EFNIL).”
