Online English-Irish Dictionary launched on the 24th January

 

The online dictionary is available free of charge from www.focloir.ie  and currently contains over 7,000 headwords, 40,000 example sentences, sound files and grammar tools. 

Since 2000, a team of 70 people has been developing the first national English-Irish dictionary since Tomás de Bhaldraithe’s was published in 1959. 

The online dictionary currently contains a 1.3 million wordcount, compared to de Bhaldraithe’s 900,000 word count, and will be developed further over the next two years.  The complete version which will contain over 40,000 headwords will be published online and as a hard copy in 2015.
